What boy has not wanted to run a train at one time or another? Running a railroad motorcar on the rails is about the only way most people will have a chance to be an 'engineer'. However, you just cannot put a motorcar on the rails just anywhere. Permission is needed from the host railroad. Loading points, the distance to be traveled, and the times and dates are just a few of the things that must be negotiated. In recent years it is customary to pay the railroad $$$ to use their tracks; most fees are on a per car or distance basis.
There are many groups across the United States that sponsor motorcar excursions. A listing of sponsoring groups can be found on the NARCOA web site. Depending on the time of year there are several motorcar excursions take place each weekend. |

But participating in a railroad motorcar trip is a lot more than just riding on the rails. There are many friends to be made among the people from different parts of the country. Having trouble with some aspect of restoring a motorcar? Someone on the trip has run into the same problem. Break down while riding the rails? At the next rest break just ask for help and whatever is wrong will get fixed.
